A Doll’s House or A Woman of No Importance?
Hello
I am going to be teaching one of these texts next year to Year 12′s. I can’t decide which one to do!! Have you read either of them and what are your thoughts? Any students who have studied them? What did you think? How about teachers; did you find either of them particularly inspiring?

14|Oct|2009 1I only know A Doll’s House, as we did it when I was in year 13. (A long time ago!) I loved it, but that may have been because I played Nora, the main character.
It is about Nora and her husband, Torvald. They live “happily” (He treats he rather like a child) with their children until a debt collector comes to claim back money that Nora borrowed from him when Torvald was ill.
She uses every method possible to pay him back without her husband finding out and her perfect “doll’s house” collapsing around her. Eventually he discovers what she did and lets rip at her, until he discovers that no one will ever find out, and decides to forgive her for everything.
Unfortunately by this point Nora is sick of the way he treats her and decides to leave him. Dramatic stuff.
It is a great story that raises some important social issues, particularly about how Nora was treated by her Father and then husband, and the chances of women surviving on their own at the end of the 1800s.

14|Oct|2009 2I don’t know about either. I’m a teacher and what I go on is this; how informative is the work, how will the students benefit from the work, is it a “G” rated work, is the author(s) known for excellent work?
If you haven’t read them, you cannot choose. You must read them and then compare the value that each holds. Also, what would you enjoy teaching and what do you think the students would enjoy too.
