Two sisters, Isabel and Kezia Burnell, have been given a doll’s house as a present. They are particularly impressed with a lamp inside the house. Isabel decides that she will choose which of their friends will be allowed to see the house. Kezia wants to allow two sisters, the Kelvey girls, to be allowed to see it, but Isabel and her Aunt Beryl don’t think they are good enough to see the house (they are a lower social class than the Burnells). Eventually, Kezia defies her relatives and shows the house and the lamp to the Kelveys. Aunt Beryl scolds her, but the Kelveys are happy because they have seen the lamp.
