i’m building a barbie dolls house for my daughter. i’m using chipboard, plywood and hardboard. i need to cut holes out of all these types of wood. with the chipboard (12mm) i need a hole for the top of the stairs. with the plywood i need doors, and with the hardboard i need windows. i’ve been using a jigsaw for most of the cutting. If i tilt the jigsaw and straighten it gradually will this work? please help.

27|Sep|2009 2Probably not. My experience trying to tilt a jigsaw and cut in have generally resulted in disastrous jagged cuts going every which way, this is VERY difficult to control.
Most people would use a circular blade to cut in with, I think, and then finish the cuts with a jigsaw. For the windows, you could drill a hole at each corner, and then start your jigsaw in the holes. But that doesn’t work good for your doors, because the drilled holes you started in would ruin the material you cut out for reuse as the door itself- unless, of course, you cut the door from another piece of material. That’s another way. I’d consider using a hole saw for the hole at the top of the stairs, it probably would look a lot neater.

27|Sep|2009 3You can make a plunge cut with your jigsaw. It is done all the time. Tilt it forward with the shoe firmly on the work and gently tip it back, letting the blade do it’s own cutting. By that I mean don’t try to force it at all. Practice on some scrap until you feel comfortable doing it. You can make just as clean and precise a cut as when it is flat with a bit of practice.

27|Sep|2009 4If you start by putting masking tape over the area you plan to cut and make your marks on it, the saw will not do quite as much damage to the wood ends. Drill some holes in the waste area and start your bit in the hole. Don’t force the saw through the wood. Go slow. Be certain you don’t cut through your table or the cord because you’ll be moving a lot throughout the process.

27|Sep|2009 5Well since it is a doll house they must be small cut outs. Draw out the openings, then drill a hole in the center of the openings as big you can with out going past the lines, if needed multiple holes are fine in the corners are better, then you can clean up the edges after all after your straight cuts. Good luck
