I’ve inadvertently conformed myself to traditional notions of femininity:
1. I played with Barbie dolls until I was 13 years old.
2. I had an eating disorder during high school.
3. I joined a mainstream religious cult in university that was very patriarchal, and it took me three years to see anything wrong with that.
4. I enjoy sewing.
I moved past and got over all of the above except the sewing, and I still have the urge to build doll houses sometimes.

23|Sep|2009 1My dear there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. You will be 100% functional as an adult. And this urge about building doll houses is called a hobby. You should never give that up. Maybe some day you’ll be the best designer in doll houses. Be so proud of everything you have accomplished so far. I think you are very bright and I think you will have a beautiful future. Also the fact that you played with Barbie dolls until the age of 13 is telling me that someday you are going to be a great mom.

24|Sep|2009 4In my opinion, a functional adult is capable of having healthy relationships with both others and him/herself, is able to develop him/herself, knows and listen to his/her own needs and those of others, is tolerant but can also be critical, does not feel the need to hurt others, can think for him/herself, is capable of giving and taking love, can find joy in life but also can deal with other emotions, can still play and also be serious, and so on.
In your question I don’t read anything that would make you a disfunctional person.
I do read something that tells me about an inner strenght: you managed to get out of this religious cult within a few years, and you say that you got over it.
So, I don’t see anything that implies that you are not going to be a functional adult. There is nothing wrong with traditional notions of femininity, if this is who you are and what you like to do. If you like sewing and building dolls houses, you are not the only one. Just enjoy it!
But of course, you give very little information, and you can never really predict if someone is going to be a healthy functional adult.

25|Sep|2009 7sounds like u are functional adult since u got past those things which many people don’t and worse. Why be so hard on urself? There is absolutely nothin wrong with building dollhouses or sewing as a hobby u could even make a small buisness out of it by selling what u make

25|Sep|2009 9You sound normal to me right now. what is wrong with having a little kid in any of us—-that is what makes life worth living and just having fun doing the things we really like to do. A little make believe never did hurt any of us, and it isn’t like u r hurting yourself or others. lol—sure wish i could sew . made a poncho in high school and sewed the neck together the wrong side out—just a bad yr. in the wonderful life here in the states. ok–i flunked home ec that yr. and haven’t attemp[ted to sew since.lol

25|Sep|2009 10My Goodness, I played with Barbie dolls until I was sixteen years old, I love to sew,..I had anorexia after high school, but I never joined a cult…so I would say, maybe you should start creating beautiful doll clothing, and sell them on Ebay or start a store, and as far as the religion is concerned, seek you first, the Kingdom of God,and He will open your eyes darling xoxoxox all my love and best to you

25|Sep|2009 11You are funny. How old are you. Take it easy . All you need to do is stop doing the things that you think are childish.
XYZ123
25|Sep|2009 12everybody has desires to do childish things; just people know how to control those emotions. Yes, since you have overcome many prejudices, you are at the verge of becoming a functional adult

25|Sep|2009 13If you enjoy sewing why not do it. We all love to do certain things and maybe you are a little naive but this is who you are. You are innocent and special in your own way and sewing is not something to be ashamed of. It is a skill handed down by many generations and is especially rare these days as machines are now doing this work. It is artistic to sow and even if you preceive yourself to be somewhat like a granny you are not. Sewing is a skill and many people at all ages sew in the world. Not so much in developed countries but it is something worth doing. Im 17 and I love to grow plants and write. Some people may consider these things old-fashioned but I do not care about the perceptions of others. I enjoy them and that is all that matters to me. You do not need to supress your inner creativity and innocence just to blend in. Many innocent and artistic people function well as adults.

25|Sep|2009 14i played with my little ponies till i was like 16 LOL
eating disorders and disordered eating are completely common in teenagers, so is depression, sexual promiscuity, anxiety, etc…they can all grow up to be fucntioning adults
about the cult…point is, you DID see somethign wrong with it, ur not still part of it are u? cults are about brainwashing…that can happen to anyone depending what stage of life they hit u in…u were obv just in a low spot
sewing? wth hahah most women know how to/enjoy/LOVE sewing!! its a very beneficial skill
god i dont care if ur 45, play with barbies again and build dollhouses…some people very lucrative careers testing toys and sewing and building dollhouses, maybe its a creative skill u have for a reason, ever tried selling them?
embrace ur childishness if it comes (which it doesnt sound like u have any more of than the average person)
so if i draw and color and paint just like i did when i was a kid, (different art of course hehe) then does that mean im not a functioning adult?
besides…what is a functioning adult? someone who society says is? you get up. brush ur teeth, take care of urself, ur house, ur bills, ur job, ur a functioning adult…if ur a kid after that and run around in dress up clothes all night who cares hahah there are ALOT worse things people do in thier spare time than sew, play with barbies or build dollhouses
we all go through hardships (ie ur eating disorder and the cult), thats what defines us as human beings, the person we become from the good and bad in life…use ur knowledge to help others, going through those things will help u recognize problems in teh future…dont be ashamed of anything…be proud for being resilient and getting past those things
just reread ur first two sentences before ur list…u have excellent grammar and intellectual skill…ur already a functioning adult, congrats lol
