You can’t do what you said without the money to make it happen. Besides, when you have kids your outlook changes. You want the house because it’s more security and allows them more room for a comfortable childhood, and no monthly debt after 15-30 years. You have multiples because you fall so in love with your first one and only see the benefits. You take that better job that stresses you out to provide for them (ie health care, financial security).
Don’t be so concerned with your own thoughts and desires if you plan on having a family. Once you have a family, they come first. It’s that desire that drives the American Dream today.
Nobody really cares if you want to do it or not in the real world. This line of thought usually only comes up in High School, so I can tell you that your perceptions will change when you get older. Your actions become less driven by your outcome, and more by your devotion to family.

but to answer your question, this belief is unacceptable for the same reasons that other things are unacceptable…
thinking one way is easiest
it is difficult for many to process other ideas and ways of being

I totally agree with you. Life isn’t all about money and having the biggest house. Most wealthy people are not even happy that is why we Read about them over dosing and always getting into drama. People may think that materialistic things can bring you happiness but when the day is over none of that means anything. At the end of the day it should be about your family, life health and strength that is what makes us wealthy; a sound mind and love for one another that is not based on something that the world has to offer!

These are not individuals with self worth. They are racing to “become” whatever society exalts in the majority as “successful” Because they were raised to “Become President someday” so–they fear failure, they need to please and are willing to burn up all their “fuel” to acquire what the majority claims is “the good life”, “the perfect body”, total control of their environment or at least build the facade to deceive others until they crash and wind up in rehab! Better to be childlike in your heart of hearts and discerning of the time in your mind and enjoy your life and help others to do the same and consider everyone as yourself, that way you will do little harm and feel fulfilled in life.

I agree..in a sense.
I think that everyone’s idea of the “American dream” is different.
Society does put pressure on people to have the most expensive car/house, the “hottest” spouse…you know the whole Stepford wives community thing.
But no one says that you must abide by those guidelines.
I think you should say “screw you” to the people that call you crazy and just live your life the way it will make you the happiest!!

I think anymore the “American dream” is anything you desire. Just like it’s becoming more common for couples to have no children. I have friends who have already sterilized themselves and they are only in their early 30′s. I think it’s a good thing especially with so many people abusing and killing their children. My dream is just to be happy and enjoy the time I get to spend with my family. A bigger house means more cleaning…..and yeah, who needs the stress of it all? It’s being happy and content with what you have instead of always wishing you had more…..

I do, I do! Especially as a woman, people find it unimaginable that marriage and kids aren’t my #! priority. But whatever- people who do want the american dream make their choices, and I make mine. Think I’ll go climb into my cheap (but dependable) 2000 Toyota Echo and drive to the beach after work today, instead of home to the nonexistant husband and kids. Live and let live is my motto.
